Liu Bocheng Refused to Celebrate His Birthday    

1942年12月，刘伯承迎来50岁的生日。  

Liu Bocheng would turn to 50 in the December of 1942.  

中央决定并指示，在太行山抗日根据地为刘伯承举行万人庆祝大会活动，以表彰他的革命功绩，鼓舞敌后军民的斗志。  

The Central Committee made a decision and instructed to hold a celebration ceremony of up to 10,000 people in the Mountain Taihang Anti-Japanese Base to Commender Liu’s revolutionary achievements, and also to ignite the spirit of soldiers and civilians.

刘伯承得知为他举办祝寿活动的消息后，内心十分不安，始终不愿意说出自己生日的具体时间，政治部只好自行决定，在12月16日为刘伯承庆祝生日。  

After knowing that a birthday party was to be held for him, Liu was quite uneasy and refused to reveal the exact date. Therefore, the Political Department had no choice but to set the date on December 16th.  

与此同时，八路军129师的各报记者前往师部采访刘伯承，希望他谈一下自己的经历，都被刘伯承婉拒。  

Meanwhile, journalists of the 129th Division of the Eighth Route Army went to the division headquarter, hoping that Liu could talk about his experience, but Liu declined.

被泼了冷水的记者不甘心地进一步申明说：“师长，不是给您庆贺50岁寿辰嘛！这是我们的工作呀！”  

Despite being rejected, the journalist further explained: “Commander, it’s our job to interview you as your 50th birthday party is right around the corner.”  

刘伯承闻言后更坚定地拒绝说：“庆啥子寿嘛！我不晓得。你们无事找事，不要这样搞好不好?群众都还没有吃饱肚皮！走吧！走吧！”  

Hearing about the journalists’ words, Liu put on an even more steadfast manner and responded: “What’s the big deal? My birthday? You are doing no one’s good. Don’t you know that our people are still starving? Leave me alone.”
