Call me Comrade    

刘少奇反对突出宣传个人，更不许别人为自己歌功颂德。

LIU Shaoqi is opposed to propagandizing the individual, let alone allowing others to sing the praise of himself.

1954年，刘少奇当选为全国人大常务委员会委员长。

In 1954, LIU Shaoqi was elected chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.

这给身边工作人员带来一点小麻烦——毛泽东很早就当了主席，大家早就称其为“主席”了；周恩来当政务院总理后，大家也称其为总理，这是很自然的。
This caused a little trouble to the staff around him―MAO Zedong became chairman a long time ago, and everyone had called him “Chairman.” After ZHOU Enlai became the prime minister of the Council of State, everyone also called him the prime minister, which was natural.

但，怎样称呼少奇同志呢？以前大家都称他为“同志”，现在是否改口称“委员长”呢？

But how do you call Comrade Shaoqi? He used to be addressed as “Comrade,” but now should we use “Chairman” instead?  

当选后第一个向刘少奇请示工作的，是机要秘书杨俊。
After being elected, the first person to ask LIU Shaoqi for instructions was YANG Jun, the confidential secretary.

他到门口后，犹豫了一下，就叫了一声：“委员长。”

After he reached the door, he hesitated for a while and called out: “Chairman.”

但刘少奇没有吭声，像是没有听见。

But LIU Shaoqi didn’t say a word, as if he hadn’t heard it.

杨俊就提高嗓门又叫了一声“委员长”，这次刘少奇抬起了头，面带不悦地说：“你怎么突然叫起这个来了，不感到别扭吗？

”YANG Jun raised his voice and called out “Chairman” again. This time LIU Shaoqi lifted his head and said unpleasantly: “Why are you calling me this all of a sudden? Don’t you feel awkward?”

王光美马上说：“我们还是叫同志嘛！

”WANG Guangmei said immediately: “Then, we will call you Comrade as before! "  

刘少奇也缓和了口气，说：“以后不要这样了，叫同志多顺口啊！”
Then, LIU Shaoqi said in a mild tone, “Don’t do this again; call me Comrade, and I would be more comfortable about it!”

后来他专门向身边工作人员交待：“中央领导人中，只有三个人可以称职务，即毛主席、朱总司令、周总理。”
Later, he specifically told the staff around him: “Of the central leaders, there are only three individuals who can be called by positions, namely Chairman Mao, Commander-in-Chief Zhu, and Premier Zhou.”

在中南海，人们对刘少奇的称呼始终是“少奇同志。”

Therefore, in Zhongnanhai, people always call LIU Shaoqi “Comrade Shaoqi.”
